The reason why we had those insane floods and storms and fires is because we have ruptured the 1.5 degree temperature barrier and it's going to carry on being more and more of these things forever unless we turn this around It really is as simple as Over the past 20 years it's gone up to 12 Hiroshima bombs per second This problem in this sense and as I say the word problem is completely inadequate the emergency as it's sometimes called in this sense has got 4 times worse over the last 20 years It's got 4 times worse on this crucial measure in just 20 years right We don't want to go there We cannot afford to go there These emissions keep on going up and we now have governments such as the Trump administration who are doing pretty much absolutely the worst things possible to make the situation even worse than it is So you know I'm not scaremongering or anything here I'm simply making sure listeners and viewers understand the true gravity of the situation because coming back to your question about emotion what really gets me about this is that yeah I'm worried about what the world's gonna be like if and when I get to be an old man I'm really quite worried about that It scares me sometimes But what I really feel is what world are we leaving to my nieces and nephews What worlds are we leaving to not really leading but leaving to the next generation and then the generation after that It's a profound and horrendous irresponsibility what is going on Unless things change radically and frankly even if they do our descendants are going to curse us or at least they're going to curse people like Trump and the fossil fuel majors and so on They're going to hate and despise them and their names are going to be the most awful mud in the entirety of human history And that's another emotion which is the emotion of anger and rage These are the emotions which are appropriate to our situation Yeah it's true that the climate situation is not changing as fast as other things You know it doesn't onset as fast as a war or as fast as a pandemic but it's bigger and more grinding than any of those things right
