Dr. John Izzo defines impotence as the widespread feeling of powerlessness to change existing systems, referencing his book 'Stepping Up' and a survey where 70% of respondents felt their individual actions wouldn't make a difference.
In my book, Stepping Up: How Taking Responsibility Changes Everything, I suggested that impotence is one of our greatest challenges, and not the kind that can be fixed by a little blue pill from the pharmacy. The impotence that I'm talking about is the pervasive feeling across the globe that collectively and individually, we can't change the systems that we've created together. In fact, when I wrote the book, Stepping Up, we surveyed thousands of people, asking them, "Why don't you step up more and take initiative to try to create change in your community and society, e- even in your business?" And 70%, the number one answer was, "I'm only one person. It won't matter if I step up." In other words, they felt less than powerful.
