So let me explain it this way So 20 years ago the excess heat that was accumulating in our atmosphere because of carbon dioxide and the other heating gases the excess heat was equivalent to 3 Hiroshima bombs per second Now if you know anything about Hiroshima you'll know that the temperature at Hiroshima when the Hiroshima bomb exploded was briefly hotter than the temperature on the surface of the sun This is the reason why this measurement is used the amount of heat in a Hiroshima bomb explosion That's a lot of heat So we were accumulating 3 Hiroshima bombs per second 20 years ago So already a lot already not good Over the past 20 years it's gone up to 12 Hiroshima bombs per second That's the excess heat that is accumulating in the atmosphere the heat that is getting stuck in by the greenhouse layer that is not going back out to space So 3 into 12 I'm sure that any listener however basically arithmetic can do that sum This problem in this sense and as I say the word problem is completely inadequate the emergency as it's sometimes called in this sense has got 4 times worse over the last 20 years People sometimes say climate change the problem with climate change is it's very gradual so people don't really notice it It's got 4 times worse on this crucial measure in just 20 years right So imagine if it gets 4 times worse again in the next 20 years That'll mean that it'll be 16 times as bad as it was 20 years ago right We don't want to go there We cannot afford to go there But that is exactly where we are headed
